My “Shade” series juxtaposes two important sides of my practice: painting and process. The luminous white shapes are built up in many layers (often times over 150) of watercolor washes. The small strips of paper beneath are used to catch the paint as it drips onto the floor during the painting process: a methodical painting process also yields a chaotic result. I find their visual relationship extremely gratifying and difficult to communicate beyond this binary of methodical and chaotic.
I also paint portraits, make works in response to literature and art and showcase pieces that emerge during my studio process.
